Bryan Mullarkey – Skipper
Age: 67
Gender: Male
Nationality: Republic of South Africa
Mainly 45 years of mountaineering, having climbed extensively in the UK and the Europeans Alps plus trips to the greater ranges in Alaska, Himalaya, Africa, Greenland and the Andes. As a sailor probably best describes as an “on and off” sailor for the last 25 years. The first time the Vags MC entered the race was in 2010 in my somewhat smaller Hunter Delta 25, so we thought we’d bring a bigger boat this time.
My only other sail racing experience has been occasional racing round the can in friends’ boats, plus a Cork Week and a Fastnet in the 90s.
My team are all committed mountaineers and come from the same club.
Christine Salvage – Crew/Runner
Occupation: Business Analyst
Age: 54
Gender: Female
Nationality: British
Mainly mountaineering, with very little sailing experience. Climbed in the Alps, Greenland and the Andes. Has been known to do the odd marathon over the years including 4 successes in the Snowdonia Marathon.
Chris spends most of her leisure time these days with her 2 horses competing in Eventing and Dressage, she claims she’s only doing the 3PYR to support the skipper but she’ll definitely be competitive when it comes to it.
Stephen Grove – Crew/ Runner
Occupation: Veterinary Surgeon
Age: 54
Gender: Male
Nationality: British
Completed 3PYR 2010 and 2012
Limited other sailing experience -3weeks in Mediterranean and the around the island Anglesey yacht race
Experienced mountaineer climbing in UK , Europe, Greenland, North and South America, Including peaks over 6000 m such as mount McKinley
Jana Nekulova – Crew/ Runner
Age: 40
Gender: Female
Nationality; Czech Republic
Jana is also a member of the Vagabond Mountaineering Club. An experienced rock climber and ski-mountaineer. Her sailing experience is quite limited although she has attended sailing courses in Croatia. She is currently reading various RYA handbooks in order to (re-)learn the terminology as she only knows the Czech words for all the bits of ‘string’.
Stephen Mee – Crew/Runner
Occupation: Software developer
Age; 40
Natonality: British
Steve describes himself as a “long distance runner who's had an armchair interest in sailing”, and the Three Peaks race in particular, for many years. He took part in the 2014 race, with the Vags team in Rob Jordan’s boat, as a very late stand-in for the injured Steve Grove. With zero sailing hours logged his first time crewing a yacht was leaving Barmouth harbour at the start of the race. Talk about a baptism of fire! He loved every second of the race and is excited to be returning in 2015.
Past running achievements include the Lakeland 100, Highland Fling, Lakeland 50 and 10 Peaks.
Being entirely mountaineers we revere old man Tilman, so will be doing all we can to get our hands on the trophy bearing his name. The only thing holding us back might be our running and sailing abilities.
